CRACKED OR FOGGED WINDOW?
How to Know If You Need a Repair or Full Replacement.
If you’ve noticed a crack running across your window or a hazy, foggy patch that won’t wipe away no matter how hard you clean it, your first instinct is probably: Does this mean I need a new window? Understandably, it can cause irritation and create concerns around the potential costs. But here’s something a lot of homeowners don’t realize: in most cases, you don’t need to replace the entire window. You just need to replace the glass.
At A Glasco, we’ve been repairing windows and replacing glass across San Diego for 30 years. One of the most common misconceptions we run into is the idea that any glass damage means tearing out the whole window, frame and all. That’s rarely true, and knowing the difference can save you a significant amount of money and hassle.
Why Windows Fog Up: Understanding I.G.U.s
Most modern windows aren’t made of a single pane of glass. They’re built as an Insulated Glass Unit (IGU), two (or sometimes three) panes of glass sealed together with a layer of air or gas in between. That sealed gap is what gives your window its insulating properties. This helps keep your home’s temperature stable and your energy bills lower.
Over time, that seal can fail. When it does, moisture works its way into the gap between the panes, and you get that telltale foggy or hazy appearance. Sometimes with visible condensation or even mineral deposits building up on the inside of the glass where you can’t reach it.
Here’s the good news: a failed seal doesn’t mean your window itself is broken. Your frame, hardware, and the window’s structure are almost always still in perfectly good shape. What’s failed is the sealed glass unit itself and that unit can be replaced on its own, with the original frame staying exactly where it is.

What About Cracked Glass?
Cracks or breaks are more straightforward, but the same principle usually applies. A crack — whether from an impact, a stray baseball or golf ball, or thermal stress — typically affects only the glass, not the frame. In the vast majority of cases, we can replace the glass or IGU without any work needed to the frame.
Though very rare, any exceptions are usually structural: if there’s damage to the frame and/or surrounding area, typically a full replacement will be needed and potentially with a general contractor. This type of work is a conversation to have with a professional. We can help you with this process and even refer you to a trusted contractor if further help is required beyond our scope.
